Greenwashing 101 (How to Spot a Fake 'Clean' Brand)

The beauty industry is currently a bit of a "Wild West." Because terms like "natural," "organic," and "clean" aren't strictly regulated by the FDA in the way we might think, brands can use them as mere marketing buzzwords.

As someone who has navigated this space for years, I have seen too many women pay a premium for products that are essentially conventional formulas with a "green" sticker slapped on the front. This is greenwashing, and it is time we learned how to see through it.

Look Beyond the Front Label

The front of the bottle is where the marketing happens. The back of the bottle (the INCI list) is where the truth lives. Just because a bottle has a picture of a leaf on it doesn't mean it is clean.

One of the biggest red flags? "Fragrance" or "Parfum." In the US, companies aren't required to disclose what is in their fragrance. It is considered a "trade secret." Often, that single word hides a cocktail of phthalates and synthetic chemicals that can disrupt your endocrine system.

The Transparency Test

A truly clean brand is proud of its sourcing. They will tell you where their ingredients come from and why they chose them. If a brand is vague about its "proprietary blends," that is usually a sign to look elsewhere.

Search for brands that use "Third-Party Certifications." While not perfect, seals from organizations like MADE SAFE or Leaping Bunny provide an extra layer of accountability that a brand’s own marketing team cannot provide.

You can actually verify the safety of almost any product you own by using the EWG Skin Deep database. It is an essential tool for any woman who wants to be an informed consumer rather than just a customer.

The Price Point Reality Check

Clean ingredients, ethically sourced and properly preserved, cost more than synthetic fillers. If a product is claiming to be "100 percent organic and wild-harvested" but costs five dollars at a drugstore, something doesn't add up.

You don't need a twenty-step routine. You just need three or four high-quality, transparently made products that actually respect your skin's biology. Quality over quantity is the ultimate clean beauty mantra.
